READ 990 Students: Reading Response
For students in Ms. Willcutt's READ 990 course, what are your reactions to one of the stories we've read so far in Fiction on a Stick? Pick one of the short stories ("Assimilation", "Zamboni Blues", "The Body Remembers", "Betty Garcia", "Xanadu") and write a paragraph in response to the events in the story. What did you think of it?

I liked this story because it was sort of a love story. It walks us through the course of a young couples relationship. It talks about how the decisions we make when we arr young can affect us for the rest of our lives. Betty and her boyfrind decide to have sex and it talks about how they decide what type of contraceptive to use and then in the end it talks about how Betty finds out she is pregnant and what they are going to do about school, the baby. How are they going to pay for law school and do they get a abortion. I liked how Bettys uncle made sure to tell her boyfriend that he admired what he was doing. I think he did this so he would know that they were not alone in this situation and because most kids his age would have ran away or suggested a abortion but he didn't want Betty to have a abortion. This is the type of book that I would choose for myslef to read so it interested me more than any of the other stories that we read in Fiction on a Stick. I think that this was typical of what is happening in the world today. Kids seem to be having sex at younger ages and we are ending up with more teenage pregnancys so it really grabbed my attention. I also thought it was cool how her boyfriend loved her enough to want ot stay by her and the baby and protect them even though this is something they did not plan on happening at their age.
ReplyDeleteBeing an immigrant as Veshko, the main character in the novel Assimilation, by Sarah Stonish, I have sympathy with Veshko. Veshko has some struggles when he tries to be a part of his community. For example, he goes to church, hang out with neighbors, Peter, work in his town, and tries to communicate with people around him. However, Veshko feels lonely, homesick, and disappointed with them. The main reasons that he still is apart from his community are the distance (or difference) of language, culture, values (or beliefs). Similarly, I have some difficult stituations to get along in a new country, the U.S. Nevertheless, I am not disappointed and do not want to give up. I believe that, "It will be darker before dawn." The author Sarah Stonish gave the readers, especially the immigrants like us, warmth from her heart through the story Assimilation. Thank you to Sarah Stonish.

The body remembers.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this story of relaxation and remembering. I feel that the body does retain part you your own past. The same as Lylia has hardened from the stress of her job and traveling. The messauge that Rene provides not only relaxes her and the patient also. The body will fight you when it’s stressed out. It tense up, ache and give you headaches and can make you ill. Just like Lylia is feeling. Although Rene also believes that your body carries the weight of life throughout the generations. I believe that she is referring to the history of her people and it affects their life. Like her grandmother taught her. Lylia went to get a messauge to forget about her worries for a few hours. The trip out to the country is peaceful, as she travels she takes time smelling to air and listening to the birds. The messauge that Rene gives released Lylia stresses of traveling, being away from her family and her job. At the end of the messauge they both talked a few minutes enjoying the fire.

Betty Garcia
ReplyDeleteI really liked this story. I liked this story for a number of reasons. I liked the fact that i could relate to the theme in this story about growing up fast when facing a life changing situation. I like that james stood up for his faith and himself when the uncle was trying to talk Betty into a abortion. I think the authur gave some really great details about st.paul cause am not familar with it thier details help put a picture of the city in my mind. There was only one thing in this story that I didnt care to much for and that was the ending. I think the ending left you hanging cause you really wanted to see if Betty and James got married or did they keep the baby.

i really like all the stories that we have read. i like the fact that they are all different diversities, different age groups and different backgrounds. they all tell different stories, and they aren't the same in any way.
